GRACE — SPRING 2024-15-SDS—1920x1080

Sermon Title: Greed | Luke 12:13-21

  1. How does Jesus frame this parable? Read vs. 14-21. We learn that the critique Jesus is making of the land owner is not so much that he is wealthy, but rather that he is finding his ultimate wealth in not being rich toward God.
  2. Read vs. 15. We get a good definition for what greed is from Jesus here. List a few things that people in our culture seek to find life in. What "life" do they promise?
  3. Consider the story of the "rich land owner." What are some of the ways he is seeking to find life?
  4. Greed is not limited to financial wealth. What other resources has the Lord given us to express a generous heart?
  5. In vs. 20, the story takes a twist for the land owner. However, Jesus is inviting us to "be on guard" and to not fall into the same trap. How does being rich toward God change our perspective on our present, past, and future?
  6. What does it mean to be rich toward God? How has God shared his riches with the world?
  7. 2 Corinthians 9:10-15 says this,
10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.

12 This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. 13 Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. 14 And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. 15 Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!
The indescribable gift of grace given to us enables us to be generous. As you consider the riches God has given to us, spend a little time praying for the people of GPC, that we would be a people who seek to expereince and to express the riches of God.
